BAFTA nominations out; SVODs hog limelight

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has come out with this year’s nominations for the British Academy Children’s Awards that will be handed out in London on November 26 in a ceremony hosted by British actor, writer and comedian Doc Brown.

After matching Horrible Histories last year with the most nominations, online platform TrueTube leads the way this year with seven nominations including Like Me(Drama), To Life (Factual), Shia//Sunni (Learning) and relationship/comedy drama Screwball! (Writing).

The platform also cornered a second channel of the year nomination after its 2016 inclusion marked the first time an online-only channel had been nominated in the category.

As for Amazon and Netflix, the SVODs each earned a pair of BAFTA noms—the former for An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love has to Win and The Snowy Day, both in the International category, and the latter for Ask the Storybots (International) and The Little Prince (Feature Film).

The Sky Kids app nabbed its first nomination for Morph in the Short Form category.

On the traditional linear side, CBeebies earned its 11th consecutive nomination for Channel of the Year, a trophy it took home last year.

CBBC, which won Best Channel two years ago, and Cartoon Network round out the category. In Animation, Cartoon Network’s mixed-media sitcom The Amazing World of Gumball is nominated once again after back-to-back wins in the category. The hit series is also up for a Writer award.

Other programs with two nominations include Do You Know? for pre-school Live Action and Maddie Moate for Presenter as well as TV movie Hank Zipzer’s Christmas Catastrophe in the Writer and Drama categories.
