The agreement will give NBCU on-air and digital rights to the Wizarding World properties and cable TV rights for the eight Harry Potter films. The agreement spans from 2018 to 2025, and could be one of the biggest movie franchise deals ever.

Currently Disney holds rights to the Potter films, which collectively generated about US$7.7 billion in worldwide box office sales from 2001 to 2011.

The move could help boost ratings for the network’s channels, and also attendance at its entertainment resorts since the agreement will incorporate exclusive content and events for the Universal theme parks.

“JK Rowling’s Wizarding World has captured the imagination of fans of all ages, from all walks of life, all over the world…and I’m definitely one of them,” said Bonnie Hammer, chairman at NBCUniversal cable entertainment.

“I’m thrilled that our networks will be the home for this brilliant storyteller’s magical creations for years to come.”

The movies, which were distributed by Warner Bros., will appear on USA Network and Syfy, which are owned by NBCUniversal.
